WOW! What a fantastic day and what a fantastic bunch of volunteers. Just as well you were fit and had your running shoes LOL
the day started with a few more battery hens arriving back from the battery farm than originally planned..... I made an oops and put an extra hen in each crate ;) (wouldnt be like me). So 360, plus the extra one I always go back in for when my crates are full arrived back at The Nut House a little later than planned. I was so surprised to see so many wonderful volunteers had turned up to help, and help they did.
The girls were flighty, to say the least, and the hens were quite lively too. After a few escapees over the top of the electric netting, we managed to round them up and get them settled. Some of them are so comical with the typical Leghorn floppy comb hanging over one eye and the speed they travel at when they are running is something else!
I have to thank all the wonderful volunteers who gave up their time to help us sort out the girls. The rescue days just couldnt happen without them. Missed Ron being there with his trusty camera. It was my intention to take loads of pictures of everyone, but as usual my mind was more occupied with ensuring we emptied the crates and made sure the hens were ok and I didnt manage to take any pictures. WE did however manage to pass our 1000 hens rescued mark and I did take a few minutes to get some photos of Millie the 1000th hen
This is Millie, our 1000th hen rescued
We had one extra surprise on the day, another resue, slightly unusual looking hen, but should fit in well in The Nut House
Robyn..our new three legged "hen"
We were also lucky enough to get some more media coverage with Mark Rainey from Macmillan media coming out on sunday evening to do a piece that was on daybreak TV on Monday morning and a clip is on the Belfast Telegraph website
Mind you, I look like a drowned rat in the video as I had just been out with the hens and was dripping wet!
Good news is, all 361 hens from Rescue 3 have now been booked, with a few people on the waiting list in case anyone doesnt turn up. So...... Now taking numbers for March's rescue, provisionally planned for March 24th
